Council 5480 held a First Degree Exemplification on Tuesday, 9 May 2006.  Pictured above are Mike Shaffer, Ray Schrencengost, John Ritchard, and Cliff Dunn.

More than 20 Brother Knights participated in the May Adopt-A-Spot where Council 5480 cleans a 2-mile stretch of Warwick Blvd. (VA-60).  See more pictures here.

Approximately 100 mothers were honored with flowers and a nice breakfast at the Council Hall.  Folks in the picture serving breakfast include Steve, Bob, and Ansel.  See more Mother's Day Pictures here.

Troop 242, based out of Founder's Hall, has grown to 25 Scouts with 15 Adult Leaders.  During the last two years the Troop has graduated 4 Eagle Scouts.  As a sign of appreciation for the support that Council 5480 gives their Troop, a number of the Scouts participate in a ceremony where they give a copy of their official charter.  See more pictures here.

June 2006 Knight of the Month:

This brother works behind the scenes at most events.  He is quick to volunteer to help out whenever possible.  He drove all the way to Va. Beach to help out with an event recently. June's Knight of the Month is John Silva.

This brother has been active in the Council and Club since he transferred into the Council a few years back.  He and his wife are active in church and he volunteers in the other organizations he belongs to. 2006 USS Scorpion Memorial

Council 5480 is Awarded Bowling Trophy by State!

The VA State programs director, Ron Gorman, was pleased to award Council 5480 a trophy for their outstanding performance in the 2006 bowling tournament held in April. 

Brother Knight Bill Bundick built a very nice stand for the trophy where it will be kept until the 2007 winner is awarded.  Come see the trophies and pictures when you come to the Knight's Den.

With more than 100 Brother Knights and their families in attendance, the Council 5480 Father's Day Picnic was a success.

By a narrow margin, Ralph selected the most correct teams to win and had the closest estimate on the Monday night spread.  Congratulations to Ralph!!!

If you would like to participate in the pool, come to the Knights Den on Fridays, during the regular season, between 7 and 8 p.m. to get your form.

Council 5480 and Assembly 2340 hosted their annual dinner recognizing the efforts of the Knights that made the Council what it is today.

The nomination committee of 5480 Club is accepting applications for any council/club member that would like to serve on 5480 Club Board of Directors. Anyone interested will need to make their intentions known to the nomination committee by Tues 12 Sept. and be prepared to talk to the committee after the Tues 12 Sept council meeting.

Knights and Families of the Month Honored
24 October 2006

Now that the award certificates are in, the past Knights of the month for Fraternal Year 2006-2007 were honored during the Council Meeting.

There is a mis-print in the November  Knightly News.  The Craft Session on 10 November 2006 starts at 7:00 p.m.

Council 5480 would like to welcome our newest members who undertook their First Degree Exemplification: Jim Doak, Jason Damzal, Chris Bush, Will Calope, Bill Accolla, Sean Deller, Lone Wolf, Jim Ellis, and Pat Gillroy.

Tony Merendino receives award signifying that this Degree Exemplification was dedicated to him.

William Bundick took first place in our first Texas Hold'em Tournament to support KOVAR.  Congratulations Bill!

The Grand Knight presents certificate for December Family of the Month to Rene, Kristyn, Justin, and Kayla Gonzales.

On Sunday, the Council held its annual Children's Christmas Party.  There were arts and crafts, food and fun, and, of course, Santa Claus!

On Saturday, 02 December 2006, the Assembly held its annual Christmas Party at the Ft. Eustis Club.  Everyone there had a wonderful time enjoying good food and good friends.

Knights spend their Saturday afternoon moving restaurant equipment donated to the Council.

More than 15 Knights helped with Adopt-a-Spot.

Some 20 Brother Knights traveled to Washington D.C. for the annual March for Life.  If you attended this event and have more photos, please email John Edwards.

Brother Knights awoke early Sunday morning to prepare a delicious Pancake Breakfast for the the parishioners at St. Jerome Catholic Church.

Ladies and Gentlmen from the Catholic Refugee and Immigration Services Ministry (http://www.richmonddiocese.org/ris/index.htm) spoke briefly to the Council about their ministry.

The Council has set up a private group in Mike Arlo's Fantasy Racing from 106.9 The Fox.  It's free!  Follow the directions on the link to sign up and join in the fun.

Roughly 60 Ladies of Knights met on for an Afternoon Tea.  Thank you for the amazing turnout!

Brother Knights served over 100 parishioners from St. Jerome Catholic Church after the Lent Stations of the Cross service.  Parishioners dined on grilled cheese sandwiches, some with onion, and tomato soup.

When you see them, say "Hello" to our newest Brothers.

Chalice Ceremony Performed at Assembly Meeting

Sir Knights from the Color Corps performed a Chalice Ceremony at the Assembly Meeting to allow Knights and their spouses see the ceremony before it is performed at a wake or viewing.

Lewis Federico wins the Super Bowl Chili Contest for the second year running.  2nd Place winner is John Edwards and 3rd Place winner is Chuck Olson.

March Adopt-A-Spot

Brother Knights met to clean a 2-mile stretch of Warwick Blvd.  The Newport News adopt-a-spot coordinator stopped by to congratulate the Council on a continuing job well done. 

The Catholic Daughters of the Americas - many of whom are wives of Knights in our Council - held a silent auction at St. Jerome's Catholic Church to raise money for their annual conference.

Sir Knights dressed in green to celebrate the holiday.  More than 40 Couples attended.

Council 5480 hosted the March Quarterly Meeting at Peninsula Catholic High School.  Brother Knights volunteered to set up, clean up, and provide lunch.

Founder's Day Dinner

The 2007 Founder's Day Dinner celebrates 125 years of Knights of Columbus.  During the dinner GK Raschke presented awards to our local priests in appreciation of all they do.

Council 5480 competed in the State Bowling Tournament in Sterling, Virginia.  The Council fielded 4 teams plus 1 ladies team.

Appreciation night is 09 June 2007.  Any members attending are asked to review the menu, make a selection and contact Jesse Powell. 

Brother Knights braved the elements to clean a 2-mile stretch of Warwick Blvd. 

Practice has begun for the 2007 State Bowling Tournament.  Through diligent work, Council 5480 will again reign victorious as State Champions!

Brother Knight Joel Villarin is pleased to announce that he and his wife have an addition to their family!  Their son, Emmett Michael, was born on Saturday, 26 May at 1633 at Langley AFB Hospital.  He was 5lbs, 9oz, 19 in. long.  Joel says, "It's hard to tell who he looks like at this point.  He definitely has my fat nose!"

More than 50 Sir Knights, wives and guests from Assembly 2430 visited Arlington National Cemetery and participated in a Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown.

Cribbage Tournament 2007

With 12 Brother Knights in attendance, Council 5480 conducted a double-elimination cribbage tournament.  The competition was fierce; lasting well into the night.  The following Knights emerged victorious:

1st Place - GK Stephen Raschke
2nd Place - Dom Bevacqua, PGK
3rd Place - Steve Sprinkle

When you see these steely men with considerable cribbage caliber, congratulate them on their achievement!

Knights and their families came to the Hall to celebrate Mother's Day.  Council 5480 combined this event with a 'baby shower' for the pregnancy crisis center.  We collected over a truck load of consumables for newly born children.

Sir Knights held an annual ceremony honoring the brave men of the USS Scorpion who perished when the boat sank in the Atlantic.

Appreciation Night 2007

Sir Knights along with Boy Scouts from Troop 242 participated in a flag raising at our Council Home.  Mayor Frank spoke about patriotism.  More than 150 people attended the event.

Officers from Fr. Michael Bader, George Washington, and JFK Assemblies met at St. Jerome Catholic Church for the Fraternal Year 2007 - 2008 Installation ceremony.
